Dear Friend of the Circle of Dionysos;
The “Circle of Dionysos” is an emerging ritual theater troupe in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ritual theater is a form of expression that unites religious ritual with theatrical performance.
Our mission is to provide a space for LGBTIQQ (queer) people to embrace and express themselves while exploring their spirituality. We also wish to educate the general population that embracing difference is a positive thing for our society. Difference makes us stronger, more adaptable, and better able to face and explore the mysteries of the universe. Currently, queer people in our society, and globally, have a perspective on life that is not being honored. Our primary goal is to help queer people discover what that perspective is and to be able to express it to the culture at large.
The Circle of Dionysos, to date, has staged two successful ritual theater performances of “Yes They Are! Meeting and Greeting the Queerest of the Gods.” These performances consisted of actor created monologues where the actors embodied Gods and Goddesses that have queer associations. Each monologue introduced our audience to deities that they could call upon for support or strength. We are currently working on staging Euripedes’ Greek tragedy The Bacchae. Which we have subtitled: ‘A Ritual of Coming Out.’
We are dedicated to helping queer people and their allies create more space in our culture so that everyone in society can benefit from our gifts. Perhaps queer people have just the messages that the world needs right now. We know you believe as we do that this is a just and urgent cause. The Circle of Dionysos is on its way to becoming an educational non-profit. To this end we have gained the assistance of a 501(c)(3) organization the Pagan Alliance. They are our fiscal sponsor. Proof of their status can be provided upon request. Please make any checks out to “The Pagan Alliance.” In the memo section please write: “For the Circle of Dionysos.”
We have created the Circle of Dionysos as a venue for queer individuals to embrace and express their uniqueness. We want to help foster the growth of queer people everywhere so that they can in return serve society by sharing the uniqueness of their experience and wisdom.
